Doug Marrone finds a former Bills coaching term to be vulgar

By Tim Graham

PITTSFORD -- Every coaching staff has its buzz words and catchphrases.

Last year, the Buffalo Bills were big on "run fits," the kind of coachspeak that drove Buffalo News columnist Jerry Sullivan bonkers.

Sully will be pleased to hear Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone hates that term, too.

Marrone was asked Monday about his defense apparently stressing "run fits" in the second training-camp practice at St. John Fisher College.

"Run what? Fits?" Marrone said. "Yeah, we don't use that word. Noooooo.

"That's the F-word."

To be clear, Marrone was referring to "fits."

Not Fitz.

Marrone was asked what term he preferred when discussing run-defense assignments.

"We attack the run in what we do," Marrone said.

That may sound like a cute play on words, but that sometimes can make a significant difference to players. At the NFL Rookie Symposium last month, former St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals defensive back Aeneas Williams explained his career was changed by a similar verbal juxtaposition from Jairus Byrd's father.

A "run fit" sounds a tad passive and conveys satisfaction with merely being the right place at the right time.

Attack the run sounds a lot more like football to me. And probably to the players.
