Eric Weddle's agent: Jairus Byrd has earned big contract

By Tim Graham

Exactly three minutes after I posted Warren Sapp's critical comments about unsigned Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd, the agent for San Diego Chargers safety Eric Weddle tweeted some harsh words for Sapp.

David Canter negotiated Weddle's mammoth deal last year with the Chargers, and it's safe to say Byrd wouldn't mind moving into Weddle's financial neighborhood.

Weddle became the NFL's highest-paid free safety with a five-year, $40 million contract. That $8 million average was surpassed in March by Tampa Bay Buccaneers free safety Dashon Goldson.

Canter went on to tweet a few more words of praise for Byrd. He called Byrd one of the "top five safeties in the game" and added "What more does Byrd need to do? Play QB?"

In a followup text to me, Canter wrote: "I have no idea why Byrd hasn't gotten a multiyear deal, and I'm not in the room, nor do I have anything to do with him. But in my opinion he's earned a large multiyear extension."
