'Sore foot' keeps Mario Williams sidelined at first practice

By Tim Graham

WilliamsMMugPITTSFORD -- While the Buffalo Bills held their first 2013 training-camp practice, Mario Williams watched from the sideline.

Williams was in uniform tonight at St. John Fisher College, but he didn't participate in team drills because of an undefined foot problem.

Bills coach Doug Marrone said it was too soon to know the extent of the injury.

"Mario reported to our athletic training staff that he had a sore foot," Marrone said. "So what we wanted to do was hold him out of practice and let our medical staff evaluate him."

Williams didn't reveal how he hurt his foot and deferred all questions about his injury to Marrone.

"It's not a disappointment from a standpoint of, 'Gosh, I wish the player was out here for the rest of the team.' It's more of a disappointment for the individual," Marrone said. "Mario's put in a lot of hard work, went in the playbook and did a lot of work this offseason.

"So I always have initially a disappointment for the player because we tend to forget how much work they put in and you have a player that definitely wants to be out here."

Williams was hampered by a wrist injury last year. He complained about an injury that occurred in the preseason, but the Bills didn't think it was bad enough to list him on the injury report. The NFL eventually fined the Bills $20,000, and Williams had surgery during their bye week.
