Mario Williams a healthy scratch

By Tim Graham

Mario Williams was in uniform for tonight's game and watched with his helmet as though he might run onto the field at any time.

The Buffalo Bills, however, announced before tonight's preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings that Williams would not play.

Doug Marrone explained afterward that Williams and rookie middle linebacker Kiko Alonso, who also dressed, were given the night off for precautionary reasons. Alonso missed practice this week with a minor shoulder injury.

"We're trying to make sure that we're being smart, getting them ready," Marrone said. "I'm looking forward to a lot of players coming back next week. We'll see how that goes in practice."

Marrone didn't have any injury revelations aside from receiver Kevin Elliott, who was carted off the field with an apparent left leg injury. Elliott was on crutches in the locker room after the game.
