Same old Bills defense?

By Jerry Sullivan

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Bills' defense has made strides under Mike Pettine this year. They're blitzing more. They caused a lot of problems for Tom Brady and Cam Newton. But after three weeks, the overall numbers look distressingly similar to last year's. In fact, they're worse.

A year ago, the Bills gave up 362.9 yards a game. They allowed 145.8 yards a game rushing, which was 31st in the NFL. After Sunday's loss to the Jets, they're behind the 2012 pace in both categories. They gave up 513 yards to the Jets, putting them at 417.3 yards against through three weeks.

The Jets rushed for 182 yards. Through three weeks, the Bills have now given up 465 yards rushing, or 155 a game. It's bound to get better in the weeks ahead. Of course, haven't we said that before?
