Our weekly rundown on the Press Coverage blog of the players from Western New York (along with the University at Buffalo) currently in the NFL:
Steven Means: The Buffalo native and Grover Cleveland and University at Buffalo product -- a rookie defensive end with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- was inactive for his team's 31-23 loss to Atlanta. Means has played in three games for the 0-6 Buccaneers.
Mike Williams: The Tampa Bay receiver -- a Buffalo native and Riverside product -- made four catches for 32 yards against Atlanta. Williams had missed his team's Week Six game because of a hamstring injury, only the second missed game of his four-year career.
James Starks: The Green Bay Packers running back, a Niagara Falls and University at Buffalo product, missed his team's 31-13 victory over the Cleveland Browns because of a knee injury, the third game in a row he's missed.J.C. Tretter: The Akron product, a fourth-round draft pick of the Packers in April, is on the team’s physically unable to perform list after he broke his ankle in May. He is eligible to come off the list and begin practicing. The team then must decide within three weeks to activate him to the 53-man roster or put him on injured reserve for the season.
Rob Gronkowski: The Amherst native was active for the first time this season aftering missing six games following offeseason surgeries on his back and forearm. Gronk was targeted 17 times by quarterback Tom Brady and made eight catches for 114 yards during the Patriots' 30-27 overtime loss to the New York Jets. He played 48 of 75 offensive snaps (64 percent).
Brett Kern: The Grand Island native punted six times for 263 yards for the Tennessee Titans in a 31-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Kern put three of those punts inside the 20-yard line, and averaged a terrific 43.8 net yards. Only two of the six punts were returned, and those went for 0 yards.
Corey Graham: The Baltimore Ravens' cornerback, a Buffalo native and Turner/Carroll product, played 28 defensive snaps (49 percent) in a 19-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Graham made four tackles and one pass defensed. He also played 11 snaps (44 percent) on special teams.
Note: Local players Dan Gronkowski, Chris Gronkowski Jeremy Kelley, Naaman Roosevelt and Doug Worthington are currently free agents.
Josh Thomas: Thomas started at left cornerback and made three tackles for the Carolina Panthers in a 30-15 victory over the St. Louis Rams. He played 36 defensive snaps (59 percent) and one snap on special teams.
Trevor Scott: Scott signed with Tampa Bay on Aug. 20 after spending last year with New England. He played nine defensive snaps (20 percent) and seven snaps on special teams (23 percent) for the Buccaneers against Atlanta after being inactive for two straight games. He did not record any statistics.
