How the locals fared: Week Five

Our weekly rundown on the Press Coverage blog of the players from Western New York (along with the University at Buffalo) currently in the NFL:

Steven Means: The Buffalo native and Grover Cleveland and University at Buffalo product -- a rookie defensive end with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- was on a bye week in Week Five. Means registered one quarterback hit in four defensive snaps in Week Four after being a healthy inactive the previous two weeks.

Mike Williams: The Tampa Bay receiver -- a Buffalo native and Riverside product -- had four catches for 38 yards and a touchdown in a 13-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week Four.

James Starks: The Green Bay Packers running back, a Niagara Falls and University at Buffalo product, missed his team's 22-9 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week Five because of knee injury he suffered in Week Three. Starks became his team's first 100-yard rusher in the regular season since 2010 when he gained 132 yards on 20 carries during a 38-20 victory over Washington in Week Two.

J.C. Tretter: The Akron product, a fourth-round draft pick of the Packers in April, is on the team’s physically unable to perform list after he broke his ankle in May. He will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

Rob Gronkowski: The Amherst native was inactive for the fifth straight game in his team’s 13-6 loss at the Cincinnati Bengals in Week Five. Gronkowski is expected to make his season debut this week when the Patriots host the New Orleans Saints after offseason surgeries on his back and a broken forearm.

Brett Kern: The Grand Island native punted six times for 272 yards for the Tennessee Titans in their 26-17 loss to Kansas City in Week Five. Kern, in his sixth NFL season, put two of his those punts inside the 20-yard line. He averaged 45.3 gross yards and 38.8 net yards.

Corey Graham: The Baltimore Ravens' cornerback, a Buffalo native and Turner/Carroll product, made his second start of the season and played all 58 defensive snaps for the defending Super Bowl champions in a 26-23 win over Miami in Week Five. Graham made four tackles and defended one pass.

Note: Local players Dan Gronkowski, Chris Gronkowski Jeremy Kelley, Naaman Roosevelt and Doug Worthington are currently free agents. 

UB players

Josh Thomas: Thomas started at left tackle and made seven tackles for the Carolina Panthers in a 22-6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Trevor Scott: Scott signed with Tampa Bay on Aug. 20 after spending last year with New England. He played was inactive for the Bucs' most recent game, a 13-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week Four. Tampa Bay was on a bye in Week Five.
