How the locals fared: Week Six

By Jay Skurski

Our weekly rundown on the Press Coverage blog of the players from Western New York (along with the University at Buffalo) currently in the NFL:

Steven Means: The Buffalo native and Grover Cleveland and University at Buffalo product -- a rookie defensive end with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- registered two tackles and one hit on the quarterback in a 30-21 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mike Williams: The Tampa Bay receiver -- a Buffalo native and Riverside product -- missed his team's Week Six game because of a hamstring injury, only the second missed game of his four-year career.

James Starks: The Green Bay Packers running back, a Niagara Falls and University at Buffalo product, missed his team's 19-17 victory over the Baltimore Ravens because of a knee injury, the second game in a row he's missed.

J.C. Tretter: The Akron product, a fourth-round draft pick of the Packers in April, is on the team’s physically unable to perform list after he broke his ankle in May. He is eligible to come off the list and begin practicing this week.

Rob Gronkowski: The Amherst native was inactive for the sixth straight game in his team’s 30-27 win over the New Orleans Saints. Gronkowski was reportedly not cleared to play by Dr. James Andrews as he continues to recover from offseason surgeries on his back and a broken forearm.

Brett Kern: The Grand Island native punted four times for 140 yards for the Tennessee Titans in a 20-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. It was the poorest game of the season for Kern, who's in his sixth NFL season. His net average against the Vikings was 31.3 yards, almost 10 full yards below his season net average of 41.1.

Corey Graham: The Baltimore Ravens' cornerback, a Buffalo native and Turner/Carroll product, made his third start of the season for the defending Super Bowl champions in a 19-17 loss to Green Bay. Graham made four tackles, including one for a loss.

Note: Local players Dan Gronkowski, Chris Gronkowski Jeremy Kelley, Naaman Roosevelt and Doug Worthington are currently free agents.

UB players

Josh Thomas: Thomas started at left cornerback and made three tackles for the Carolina Panthers in a 35-10 victory at Minnesota.

Trevor Scott: Scott signed with Tampa Bay on Aug. 20 after spending last year with New England. He was inactive for a second straight game Sunday for the Bucs in a 30-21 loss to Philadelphia.
