Bills third team in eight months to get rid of Matt Flynn

By Tim Graham

Zero point zero.

That's the Buffalo Bills stat line for Matt Flynn.

The Bills released the journeyman quarterback today, three weeks after they signed him.

Flynn didn't get into a game for Buffalo even though EJ Manuel and Thad Lewis were injured. The Bills instead went with undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Bills made the move because Manuel is nearing a return from a knee injury, and Lewis could be available for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With the roster vacancy, the Bills signed fullback Evan Rodriguez.

On the line from Vegas: Bills a trap game for Chiefs? Don't bet on it

By Tim Graham

Las Vegas probably should've posted the Buffalo Bills as bigger underdogs this week even if Thad Lewis was healthy, said handicapper and former oddsmaker Joel Staniszewski.

Once the Bills declared Lewis doubtful for Sunday's game against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs in Ralph Wilson Stadium, laying the points became an even juicier bet.

"It seems a little strange to me that the Bills are only a three-point dog," Staniszewski said. "And that line hasn't really moved all week.

Thad Lewis doubtful for Sunday; Jeff Tuel has edge on Matt Flynn

By Tim Graham

The Buffalo Bills are on the verge of using their third starting quarterback this year.

Bills coach Doug Marrone has declared Thad Lewis doubtful for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The NFL defines "doubtful" as a 25 percent chance to play. That means undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel likely will get his first NFL start Sunday. Marrone said Tuel took "a little more" first-team reps than Matt Flynn this week in practice.

"Both those guys got to be ready to go," Marrone said. "They know the situation."

Matt Flynn: 'I'd be lying' to pretend vindication not a factor

By Tim Graham

Matt Flynn didn't really verbalize it, but his body language spoke loudly when I asked if he's looking forward to proving people wrong.

Flynn expected to be somebody's lead quarterback by now. Opportunities with the Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders crashed. Both teams got rid of him.

Now he could be on the verge of starting Sunday for the Buffalo Bills.

What in the world is going on with the Bills' QB situation?

By Tim Graham

Want to know where things stand with each Buffalo Bills quarterback as of right freaking now?

Read forth ...

EJ Manuel

Update: Practiced today, but limited with injured right knee. ... Bills coach Doug Marrone already has ruled out Manuel for Sunday because doctors haven't cleared him.

Quote: "He looks good out there." -- Marrone

Thad Lewis

Update: Missed practice with rib contusions from multiple hits in Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints. ... X-rays negative. ... Also has the flu.

Quote: "Do we want him to play? Yes." -- Marrone

Jeff Tuel

Update: Shared first-team reps in practice today. ... Has been backup quarterback all season, but leapfrogged by Lewis after Manuel got hurt in week 5.

Quote: "I feel better about Jeff right now because I know Jeff. ... The Cleveland game is probably the worst situation you could ever have for him. He's a rookie free agent. We all know that. But we do like what he does, and we like the tools. In a perfect world, we'd love to have him on the practice squad and work with him." -- Marrone

Matt Flynn

Update: Shared first-team reps in practice today. ... Still learning the Bills' offense after being signed two weeks ago. ... Was scratched for both games he has been on the roster.

Quote: "I'm in a competition with myself to learn the playbook and get myself as ready as I can. ... I feel very confident. Schematically, it's a West Coast system. I've been in a West Coast since my rookie year. I'm very comfortable with the football portion of it. To me, football's football. It's just a matter of learning how to call it." -- Flynn

Dennis Dixon

Update: Still on the practice squad. ... No intention to promote him to 53-man roster. ... Marrone confirmed Dixon is not in the competition to play Sunday.

Matt Flynn, Jeff Tuel might be battling for Bills QB job this week

By Tim Graham

The Buffalo Bills' quarterback situation has gotten even murkier.

Thad Lewis, their starter for the past three games, has the flu and sore ribs from Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints. He was unable to practice today and is iffy for Thursday.

Undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel and veteran Matt Flynn split the first-team reps in practice today and could start Sunday's game against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.

EJ Manuel was limited in practice but already has been ruled out because of his injured right knee. Bills coach Doug Marrone also announced practice-squad quarterback Dennis Dixon is not an option for Sunday.

If Lewis can't play, then Marrone said he feels better about Tuel but only because he's less familiar with Flynn, who has been the third quarterback since he was signed two weeks ago.

Marrone said he's evaluating the position "rep by rep" this week.

First-quarter analysis: Thad Lewis off and fumbling

By Jay Skurski

It took all of eight seconds for things to go south for the Buffalo Bills today in New Orleans.

Quarterback Thad Lewis was drilled by Saints linebacker David Hawthorne and fumbled on the Bills’ first play from scrimmage. The ball was recovered by New Orleans’ Junior Galette, giving the Saints the ball at the Buffalo 22-yard line.

Buffalo’s defense, though, came through. The Saints lost 7 yards on their first three plays, and kicker Garrett Hartley’s 47-yard field goal missed wide left.

Lewis needs to take better care of the ball.

He fumbled again on the Bills’ third possession. Lewis had the chance to throw, but instead pulled the ball down and was drilled by the Saints’ Cameron Jordan. Had the tuck rule still been around, Lewis would have been saved. Alas, it’s not, and Jordan recovered Lewis’ fumble at the Buffalo 21-yard line. That set up Drew Brees’ 15-yard touchdown pass to Lance Moore to open the scoring.

Bills scratch C.J. Spiller; Saints give Jimmy Graham green light

By Tim Graham

NEW ORLEANS -- Bad news for the Buffalo Bills.

The New Orleans Saints will have tight end Jimmy Graham in their offense today in the Superdome.

Graham, among the NFL's most dangerous players and a favorite target for quarterback Drew Brees, had missed practice time this week because of a foot injury. Even if Graham is limited today, he will give the Bills' defense something to think about.

Here are all of the inactives:

Buffalo Bills

  • Quarterback EJ Manuel
  • Quarterback Matt Flynn
  • Running back C.J. Spiller
  • Offensive lineman Antoine McClain

  • Running back Mark Ingram
  • Running back Travaris Cadet
  • Tackle Terron Armstead
  • Defensive end Tyrunn Walker
  • Cornerback Rod Sweeting
  • Safety Roman Harper

Doug Marrone still mulling over backup quarterback decision

By Jay Skurski

Matt Flynn has all of two practices with the Buffalo Bills under his belt.

Despite that, he's being considered for the backup quarterback role Sunday when the Bills face Miami, according to coach Doug Marrone.

"Right now, I mean, we're still going with Matt, working with Matt to get him up to speed," Marrone said today. "I think at the end of the week we'll make that decision. You know, I think it's too early for us right now."
