The cover photo some wanted

By Scott Scanlon

Editor Mike Connelly told us when several of us started to develop concepts for Refresh several weeks ago that the cover was the most important thing about the new section.

We have great photographers and graphic designers at The Buffalo News, and they work with Features Editor Bruce Andriatch and me on cover ideas.

We want images that make readers smile and, we hope, inspire them to crack open the new section on health, fitness, nutrition and family matters.

This week, as usual, we had several shots from which to choose for a cover story package I wrote on how new moms can balance their own needs with those of their newborns – thanks to photographer Sharon Cantillon.

We went with a warm and fuzzy shot of Andrea Alessi, wife of Alessi Fitness owner and fitness expert Derek Alessi, and the couple’s 11-month-old daughter, Serafina.

Some who saw all of the choices, however, pushed for the shot below, because it showed just how goofy little ones can get. Several of us got a kick out of the shot, but we decided it didn’t quite send the message we were looking for to drive people inside the section to the story package.

That said, we couldn’t resist sharing it publicly, so see below.

Thanks to Derek, Serafina, her 2-year-old brother, Luca, and, especially, Andrea, for helping us with the photo illustration shoot.

I was there, and it was as fun as it looked.
