Mount St. Mary's Hospital plans events for Heart Month

Mount St. Mary’s Hospital will celebrate Heart Month this month with its annual Lipid Panel Screening this weekend and continue with a series of events that will end Feb. 25.

Free cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL testing will be conducted from 6 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the north lobby of the hospital, 5300 Military Road, in Lewiston.

Meanwhile, Mount St. Mary’s cardiologist Dr. Benjamin Rueda will speak at 8 and 10 a.m. about heart risk factors and who should be treated, and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. LuJean Jennings will talk at 9 a.m. about implantable cardiac devices.

A complimentary breakfast will be served throughout the morning. There will be several stations for testing; no reservations will be taken. Those planning to take the tests are reminded to fast Sunday morning.

Related events include:

• Next week, the Cardiology Department will have a series of displays in the hospital’s main (south) lobby featuring information on heart health, diabetes, nutrition, stroke and physical rehabilitation.

• The “Taking Charge of Diabetes” program will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Registered dietitian Debra Hoffman will lead the program in Room 249. Call 298-2297 to register.

• From 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 20, several hospital departments will conduct a mini-health fair in the lower level of the Gallagher Center on the Niagara University Campus prior to a NU men’s basketball game. There will be blood pressure screenings, health information and raffles.

• Events conclude at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 with a presentation titled, “Are Vitamins Good for Your Health,” by Rueda, in Room 249.
