Maybe fewer goals, but more scoreboard

Sabres fans who show up Friday morning to watch the first practice of training camp will notice a large, gaping void above the ice that'll make HSBC Arena look more like an airplane hangar.

The video scoreboard will be gone.

No, the JumboTron didn't fall from the ceiling again. And it hasn't been taken down for autumn cleaning.

The Sabres are having a large, high-definition video scoreboard and ribbon boards installed in time for the regular season. The system will be similar to the astonishing setup used by the Bruins in TD Banknorth Garden.

Although the Sabres aren't going with the Mitsubishi version the Bruins have, I can speak from personal knowledge the TD Banknorth Garden display, from my perch way up in the press box, is like watching the television from my living room sofa. I would find myself drawn to the video scoreboard rather than tilting my head a few degrees downward to watch the actual game. Replays are so crystal clear, I could sometimes see the puck better on the HD scoreboard 100 feet away than I could on the TV monitor a foot to my right.

No offense to Jocelyn Thibault, but the Sabres have made a significant offseason acquisition after all.

Hey Tim, you say they didnt go with the Mitsubishi version like the Bruins have. Is ours better, worse, or just different?

Tim,

I imagine that since they are installing an HD screen that they will now have HD cameras as well as an HD production van. As I understand from earlier information these were 2 of 3 stumbling blocks to broadcasting the sabres home games in HD, the 3rd being TW adding MSGHD.

Any chance that you can find out if Time Warner plans to add MSGHD. When I've asked I get the "TW is adding new and exciting HD content as possible" form letter/email.

Smoking Buffalo? Is that what that thing it's supposed to be? I thought it would be cooler if the slug dripped slime down on the ice after every goal. Seems more appropriate.

SWEET!! But I hope the "Smoking Buffalo" remains that snorts after every goal.

What about TV broadcasts? They were originally reported to begin next season (2008-09) along with the new scoreboard installation.

I'll take a 21 inch Trinitron to get Briere back.

this is awsome, i thought they were going to wait until next season.

halle-freakin'-lujah!!!

That old one was looking more and more like a tinkertoy with every game.
