Calgary waived former Sabres defenseman Rhett Warrener today.

there may be the opportunity to sign warrener for somewhere between $750k and $1.25m/yr. (out of pocket) because cgy will be on the hook for one-half to two-thirds of his salary...not sure why they let him go...probably a combination of things...fact of the matter is, he could end up as a #5 or 6 d-man for a reasonable amount who will add traits that the d is presently lacking...if he's still got it in him, why not take a chance?
signing warrener would make no sense. there are some real idiots who comment on this blog. someone wants to gt mckee - talk about injury-prone, overpaid, and not even available! probably the same jokers who wanted buffalo to resign peca last off season. hey, maybe curtis brown, derek plante, and dixon ward are available, too. go listen to wgr and drink your genny, chumps.
In addition to a defenceman, Buffalo needs some grit up front who can score. In addition to getting a d-man, I say go after Bertuzzi who was just waived by Anaheim.
I live in Calgary. There is a reason he wasn't good enough to make the Flames. I agree he is a quality person and a fan favourite, but you cannot rebuild by chasing washed up players and hoping they still have the magic to be who they were. If you want to chase someone, chase Brian Campbell. San Jose has realized they cannot keep him, and how funny would it be to get Bernier and a first round pick for letting the Sharks rent Soupy for two months? I know the nay-sayers will say "he won't come back here", but if the money and the terms are right (ok, big stretch, I know) why would he not come back? Media say "he's going to NYR because he is friends with Drury." Did he not have any friends who are still on the Sabres?
While we're at it, let's bring back Peca too! Haha, just kidding. I don't think it's a terrible idea to claim Warrener, but the Sabres need to lock down a new top 4 guy before they start looking for the 5+ spots. We've all heard the rumors that they're currently doing just that so once we sign Brooks Orpik or Mike Green (hey, let me have this dream, haha) then let's grab Warrener if we feel we need the veteran player.
If I were GM I would say throw him an offer to see if he is interested. No matter what the decision is it will be mercilessly reidiculed on this or any other blogs by the Keyboard Coach/GMs of the Buffalo Sports World so ignore these idiots and throw him whatever offer you were thinking about giving Teppo just to see, if he doesnt want it walk away nothing lost.

Tim, I disagree with your assessment. He is not washed up, as a 7th d-man he would be a good fit with our young d-men that finished up here last season. He's not as injury prone as you may think. In 13 seasons he has played at least 60+ games in 11 of them, compared to Henrik (IR every year here} Tallinder. Besides, outside of N. Lidstrom, there's probaly 90% of d-men who don't play whole 82 game seasons. Plus he would be cost effective.
Another interesting option could be Bryan McCabe. While he's said he won't waive his no trade, Buffalo could be a viable option. If family and "being settled" in Toronto is the issue, the Sabres are so close geographically he could practically live at home, certainly be home every weekend. Something to think about...
Washed up, too slow and horribly prone to injury. I believe it would be a mistake to pursue him. Around the trade deadline, I remember talking of him considering retirement.

Was always a fan favorite. Let's get him...if not, McKee...and let's get this rebuilding the d-line process going.
