Sabres fans will get a chance to re-live the Ice Bowl, as an inside look at the New Year's Day classic will be released on DVD later this week. "The Making of a Classic" will be available starting Saturday, when the Sabres take the ice for "Puck Drop 2008" at HSBC Arena. (Still awaiting word on what time that will be.)
Sabres broadcast executive producer Matt Gould has put together the DVD, which features how the rink was made, the pregame warm-ups for the Sabres and Penguins, dressing room access, the opening cermonies and in-game action. The cost is $10, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Sabres Foundation.
For a look at this season, check Tuesday's paper for my story on Kevin Dineen, the new coach for the Sabres' minor-league team in Portland. Caught up with him today at the Amherst Pepsi Center, where the rookies and minor-leaguers gathered for brief (but arduous) on-ice testing. The rookie camp gets under way in earnest Tuesday.
And in case you missed our Sunday story featuring Lindy Ruff's thoughts on camp, here it is.
