Gerbe gone - for now

I really thought through the first weeks of training camp that Nathan Gerbe was a lock for the opening night roster. He's a future star. He had several unreal moments, including his first goal Thursday against Columbus.

But he had a pedestrian game Sunday in Buffalo, and the organization likes to start first-year players in the minors unless they really show it all every time.

"He's had a good camp," coach Lindy Ruff said after Gerbe was one of eight players sent to the minors today. "There's parts of his game that need improvement. I've liked some of the things he's done. It was a good showing for a first camp."

My original prediction, before Gerbe started lighting it up at the opening of camp, was he'd start in Portland and be here before Christmas. So I'll go back with that.

"He's a talented player and I know he'll be back here," Jason Pominville said. "He'll work hard to get back here as quick as possible."

Is there a link to the goal he scored? I couldn't find one on youtube.

Gerbe will be back up soon, I'm sure. He deserves to play with these guys and he deserves a shot in the NHL this season. I can't wait to see him get that chance.

I'm really excited for his regular season debut. I'm holding off on buying a Gerbe sweater, but only because players' numbers have a tendency to change, and who wants to be that girl with the wrong number on her sweater in 2 years? Remember when Jochen Hecht used to wear #71? Now Weber is wearing the #4 that Pratt wore last year. Anyway, I digress, can't wait to see how Gerbe and Kennedy will flourish in the AHL.
