The Detroit Red Wings have several promising rookies expected to make contributions but they still signed winger Todd Bertuzzi despite the fact his $1.5 million contract pushed them over the salary cap.
General Manager Ken Holland explained why in an Associated Press story: "We're never going to be in a position where we just give kids spots on the team. They're going to have to earn it. We're trying to contend for the Cup because that's what ownership, the front office, the players and this city wants."
