For some reason, we kept getting a ton of emails during training camp about free agent defenseman Joe DiPenta, the former Anaheim player who was only on the Sabres' radar to play in Portland and never saw any action in the exhibition season. DiPenta made the Pirates roster -- and promptly earned a one-game suspension from the AHL for an ugly two-hander in Portland's opener Saturday in Springfield.

In the same article, we learn that the Sabres signed their final draft pick from June, 20-year old RW Maxime Legault of Shawinigan of the Quebec Junior League, and assigned him to Portland rather than return him to junior. Word out of Portland is that Legault had a good camp with the Pirates.
