Nose to the grindstone

UNIONDALE -- It was a quick but tough practice for the Sabres today. Back to the grind, as Lindy Ruff likes to say. The Sabres were pretty lazy in several areas Thursday in Atlanta, both with the puck and away from it, and Ruff expects thing to be better Saturday night.

"You're always scared about days off," Ruff said. "Days off lead to distractions. Then you have to get back in the grind, feel the pain of playing again and you've got to hurt after each game. Practice, you don't hurt enough, don't put yourself in harm's way enough. Today was a practice we had to get back into battle mode and we have to take the battle mode into game mode."

The Islanders have shut out  Buffalo in its last two trips here. That fact is certainly known in the Sabres' locker room.

Said Ruff of the Islanders: "They've built quite a crop of young talent, some high-end young talent."

Added captain Craig Rivet: "This is one of the hardest-working teams we'll play all year. People tend to not give them respect beause a lot of these guys are younger. You can't take them lightly or they'll do damage to you as we've seen in the past."
