The Sabres have made their training camp group 14 players smaller, sending 12 players to minor-league Portland and two back to their junior teams. They have 35 players left in camp, including junior-eligible Zack Kassian.
Forwards Jacob Lagace, Maxime Legault, Dennis McCauley, Brian Roloff, Felix Schutz, Colin Stuart, Corey Tropp, Travis Turnbull and Derek Whitmore were assigned to Portland, along with defensemen Alex Biega, Tim Conboy and Nick Crawford. Stuart, Conboy and Whitmore need to clear waivers.
Forward Marcus Foligno was returned to Sudbury of the Ontario Hockey League, while defenseman Brayden McNabb is headed back to Kootenay of the Western Hockey League.
The Sabres have 19 forwards, 12 defensemen and four goaltenders left in camp.
