Gerbe glad to see Sabres moving in right direction

Nathan Gerbe, owner of a new three-year contract worth a reported $4.3 million, is obviously in a good mood thanks to today's deal with the Sabres. He's more excited about the team's direction.

The left winger has been watching with interest as the Sabres traded for defenseman Robyn Regehr, and he's eager to see what they do Friday when free agency starts. He already feels the team has improved, and he's excited about it.

"I would say probably everyone is excited," Gerbe said by phone. "It’s not just me, not just fans, it’s the players that are all excited. I think we’re all ready to start the season now."

Gerbe scored 16 goals last season, including 15 in the second half of the season.

"I’m pretty excited to be part of the team again," he said. "I know this team is going in the right direction, and I think everyone wants to be part of a winning group. I hope that’s exactly what I’m a part of."
