ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Robyn Regehr needed time to decide whether he should come to Buffalo. Now that he is a member of the Sabres, he has no doubt he made the right choice to accept a trade from Calgary.
"I had some really great conversations, and I’m very happy with the decision we made," Regehr told The Buffalo News by phone.
The physical, veteran defensemen called from the airport in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, where he was waiting for Sabres owner Terry Pegula and coach Lindy Ruff to arrive for a visit. The Sabres made it clear they wanted him, now Regehr wants to know what the Sabres expect of him.
"I’ve talked to Lindy a little bit on the phone, and I’ll have to speak with him a little bit more when I get down there, but I want to have a real good idea of what they expect me to bring to the team, and I’m going to try to do that," Regehr said. "For me, I also have experience to draw from. I’ve been involved with leadership groups on teams, so with a young team like Buffalo, those are kind of the areas that they’re going to want me to focus on, as well as being physical, being as physical as I can back there and helping young guys like Tyler Myers or [Mike] Weber back on the point, just help bringing them along.
"They’re a young team. I think they have lots of potential. I think they have world-class goaltending, which is a big thing. I think they’re not far away from being a contender each and every year, and that, as a player, that’s what you want, a chance to win the Stanley Cup each and every year."
