The Sabres and defenseman Tyler Myers wrapped up their contract extension talks this morning, with the sides agreeing to a seven-year deal.
TSN is reporting the deal is worth $38.5 million. Myers will make $12 million, including a $10 million signing bonus, in the first year of the deal (2012-13). The remain salaries, according to TSN, are $6 million in 2013-14, $5 million in '14-15 and '15-16, followed by $4 million, $3.5 million and $3 million. The annual salary cap hit is $5.5 million
"We had two sides that wanted to stay together," Myers' agent, J.P. Barry, told The News on Wednesday. "Tyler wanted to remain a Sabre, and having this done at an early stage was something that he wanted. He's happy that the club approached him about wanting to do this early."
The 21-year-old is entering the final year of his three-year, entry-level contract that pays $1.3 million per season. The new long-term pact will keep him in Buffalo through 2018-19.
The Sabres have called a news conference featuring owner Terry Pegula, team President Ted Black and General Manager Darcy Regier for 2 this afternoon in First Niagara Center.
