Sabres lose defenseman Finley on waivers to Islanders; likely will impact Brennan decision

Joe Finley: Claimed by the Islanders. (James P. McCoy/Buffalo News)

Anyone hoping the Sabres could sneak T.J. Brennan through waivers later this week found out this afternoon the answer is no.

The New York Islanders have claimed Buffalo minor-league defenseman Joe Finley off waivers. The hulking 6-foot-8, 249-pounder had one goal, five points and 81 penalty minutes in 36 games with the Amerks. As could be expected, he also provided a physical presence for the club.

Finley signed a three-year, $1.575 million deal with the Sabres prior to last season. He played five games for Buffalo and recorded 12 penalty minutes and a minus-3 rating in very limited ice time in 2011-12.

Brennan, who reported to Sabres training camp Sunday, leads the Amerks with 14 goals and 35 points in 36 games. He will need to clear waivers to return to the Amerks.

The Sabres have nine defensemen on their roster, so it was possible the team would try to sneak Brennan back to the minor leagues through waivers later this week as one way to alleviate the logjam. With the lesser-skilled Finley getting claimed today, it's nearly certain the Sabres won't risk losing Brennan.

Rochester goaltender David Leggio and defenseman Drew Schiestel cleared waivers.
