Stars put Roy on IR even as they ponder new deal

By Mike Harrington

Old friend Derek Roy is coming off shoulder surgery but was playing nearly 20 minutes a game for the Dallas Stars before being put on injured reserve by the Stars Monday night due to a groin problem. Roy had just two assists in the four games but the Stars still think he can be part of their core.

In fact, GM Joe Nieuwendyk says the team is likely looking at trying to get Roy to sign an extension; he's in the final year of his six-year, $24 million deal he signed with the Sabres in 2007.

Roy went on IR to make room for Jamie Benn, who moved from RFA status to signing a five-year, $26.25 million deal.
