OTTAWA – The Sabres’ hottest line from the end of last season is back together – for now.
Tyler Ennis will center left wing Marcus Foligno and right wing Drew Stafford when the Sabres visit Ottawa tonight. It’s up to them how long they’ll be together.
“We’ve had lots of conversations the last couple days,” coach Lindy Ruff said in Scotiabank Place. “We’re going to give it one more shot, see if they can make a few adjustments. If not, we’ll have to make a quick change.
“I thought Stafford was in on a couple opportunities last game. That line was a big line for us. If we could get that line going again the way it went, we’d have some depth in our scoring.”
The trio combined for 21 goals and 49 points in 13 games at the end of last season, but Stafford has no goals this year and Foligno has one. It led Ruff to break them up a few games ago.
“We’re just trying to work on trying to get a little more pucks to the net, trying to get a guy or two around the net, get in those areas that goals are being scored because we need to get on the board,” Stafford said. “You look back at a lot of the goals we scored, they were odd-man rushes and plays like that. Obviously, that hasn’t been happening. We kind of got a little bit more perimeter play than we should have had in our game, and that cost us scoring opportunities and obviously production. We’re trying to have back-to-the-basics look right now.”
