It certainly helps to have the NHL's leading scorer but it's still hard to imagine the Sabres are third in the NHL in goals with 35. But that's the fact. Of course, being tied for last in goals-against with Washington (41) remains a huge issue.
Here's the latest numbers on Thomas Vanek's epic start to the season:
---Vanek has an NHL-high 10 goals and 21 points in 10 games played. No one else in the league has more than 17 points.
---He is the sixth player in Sabres history to have 20 points in 10 or fewer games. He has five multi-point games in his first 10.
---Vanek has 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in his last 20 games dating to last season
---Vanek played 23 minutes, 56 seconds tonight -- his most ice time since playing 24 minutes against Philadelphia on Jan. 11, 2011.
Said Steve Ott of Vanek: "It's awesome to watch, isn't it? He's been finding a way, he's been magical."
Asked if there was any doubt he was writing No. 26 in his shootout lineup, coach Lindy Ruff joked, "I actually wrote 26 three times and I had to scribble out a couple."
