The Sabres called up speedy winger Brian Flynn from Rochester this evening and have confirmed they opened a roster spot by putting Jordan Leopold on injured reserve.
One issue could be whatever is ailing Thomas Vanek. He sat out today's practice for maintenance, not unusual of late, but the Sabres could be concerned he won't be ready to play.
(For the record, I'm not in favor of sending Mikhail Grigorenko back to junior. Even with limited ice time, I think it benefits him to stay here and work with the Sabres' coaches in practice, their skating coach and their strength and conditioning program. The Sabres can still send Grigorenko back to Quebec; they would simply have burned year one of his entry-level contract).
Flynn, 24, is a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder who has 16 goals and 16 assists this year for the Amerks, ranking 10th among AHL rookies in goals and points. He's tied with Mark Mancari for the Rochester lead in goals. He signed with the Sabres last March and played five games at the end of the 2011-12 season in Rochester on a pro tryout from the University of Maine.
One other point: If you needed any more confirmation Luke Adam is toast in this organization, here's another sign.
