Archrivals Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin are in another showdown. This time, John Tavares has joined as the third man in.
The NHL announced the three finalists for the Hart Trophy this morning, and the MVP candidates are Pittsburgh's Crosby, Washington's Ovechkin and the Islanders' Tavares. Voting was conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the conclusion of the regular season, and the winner will be announced during the Stanley Cup finals.
(For the record, the top three on the five-man ballot submitted by me, in order, were Ovechkin, Crosby, Tavares.)
After all three conclude the playoffs and the MVP race, they can start getting ready for the 2014 Olympics.
“We are proceeding under the assumption that the NHL will participate in Sochi," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said today after a meeting in Sweden, according to IIHF.com. "We are still working on important issues with the IIHF and the IOC, and subject to our board of governors’ consideration and approval, it remains the objective that Sochi will be the fifth consecutive Olympics with NHL participation and where the NHL shuts down for the duration of the Olympic tournament.”
According to the IIHF.com story, the NHL has said:
- All players will travel by charter from four North American hubs to Sochi.
- The last playing day prior to the Olympic break would be Feb. 8, 2014, with approximately half of the 30 teams playing on that day and half on Feb. 7.
- The selected players would depart Feb. 8 or 9. They will arrive in Sochi on the 10th with Tuesday the 11th being a full practice day. The men’s tournament opens Feb. 12.
- The NHL’s regular-season schedule would resume Feb. 25, two days after the Gold Medal Game in Sochi.
