Sabres have to face Tavares-Grabner combo; each averages point per game vs. Buffalo

By John Vogl

UNIONDALE -- John Tavares and Michael Grabner usually torment the Sabres on their own. They'll be playing together tonight, which could make for another long night for Buffalo.

The Islanders have put Tavares as the center for the speedy winger for tonight's game in Nassau Coliseum. Tavares has eight goals and 15 points in 15 career games against Buffalo, while Grabner has nine goals and 11 points in 11 games.

"Obviously, Grabby’s speed is his biggest asset," Tavares said this morning. "I don’t think there’s anyone in the league that can really back off defensemen like he can. It can create space.

"When he’s playing aggressively with his speed, I find that’s when he’s really making it tough on the other team."

The Islanders, who have been off since Saturday, are 2-2-1 but have lost two straight. The Sabres (0-6-1) are one setback away from setting the franchise record for longest winless streak to open the season.

"It doesn’t matter," Grabner said. "We’re going to get ready like for any other game. It doesn’t matter what their record is. They’re going to want to come out and play to get the win."
