Game off: Sabres-Canes postponed

By Mike Harrington

The Sabres' game against the Carolina Hurricanes tonight in First Niagara Center has been postponed, two sources have confirmed to The Buffalo News.

The Sabres have yet to officially announce the postponement but this is expected to take place in the next 30 minutes. Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer has also reported the Hurricanes have been told the game is off.

More to come.

2:50 p.m.: The Sabres confirm the game is off "due to the hazardous weather conditions in the Buffalo area."

2:52 p.m.: The NHL release on the postponement says a make-up date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed.

2:59 p.m.: The Sabres report their last weather-related postponement at home was Dec. 6, 2000 vs. New Jersey (game played next day). Prior to that was a 1995 game against Tampa Bay at Memorial Auditorium.

So that means the only other postponement at First Niagara Center was the Nov. 16, 1996 game against Boston that was wiped out when the jumbotron crashed to the ice a few hours before faceoff. That actually caused schedule moves of two games.
