Varone gets first call-up to Sabres; McNabb, Porter sent to Rochester

By Amy Moritz

Amerks leading-scorer Phil Varone has earned his first NHL call-up.

Varone, who is in the second season of his three-year, entry-level deal, has eight goals and 33 points in 38 games with the Amerks this season and is a plus-5. He also leads the club in shots on goal with 101, and judging by the Sabres need to get pucks to the net, this is an attractive stat.

In order to make room for Varone, the Sabres sent defenseman Brayden McNabb and forward Kevin Porter to Rochester. McNabb has no points and is plus-1 in 12 games with the Sabres. Porter hasn't played since suffering an injury Dec. 21.

Meanwhile, coach Ted Nolan said his team needs to execute better.

"We had a good meeting with the team today," Nolan said. "We talked about execution. We've got to execute a little bit better. We can't have spurts where we go for the goals and forget about the defensive zone and vice versa. It's about executing all aspects of our game."
