Zemgus Girgensons is still looking for his first point at the world championships, but his Latvian team has made one.
Latvia (1-1) upset Finland in its opening game of the tournament in Belarus and will face Kazakhstan today. Latvia, coached by the Sabres' Ted Nolan, made a name for itself by scaring Canada during the Olympics.
"Our confidence level as a team has grown and is carrying over here," Girgensons told John Sanful of IIHF.com. "We don’t focus on other teams and what they are doing. We have a game plan and need to stick to it. We are successful when we make other teams adjust to us."
Girgensons' linemate in Buffalo, Cody Hodgson, has a goal and assist in three games for Canada, which has received one assist from Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers.
Williamsville native David Leggio stopped seven of eight shots doing mopup goaltending for the United States during a 6-1 loss to Russia. The teams' stats page is here.
