Myers, Pysyk beneficiaries of Leopold trade

By Jay Skurski

With Jordan Leopold sent to St. Louis on Saturday, the Buffalo Sabres have to replace more than 21 minutes of ice time.

In their first game without the veteran defenseman, the beneficiaries were Tyler Myers and rookie Mark Pysyk.

Myers skated a game-high 28 minutes, 13 seconds in the shootout loss, while Pysyk was on the ice for 13:52 – a game after being a healthy scratch in Florida.

"It felt good," Myers said of the extended work. "It's whatever the coaches are going to decide how to play us. I think all the 'D' has been doing a really good job of adjusting to what has been given to them."

Myers didn't learn of Leopold's trade until arriving at First Niagara Center for the game.

Sabres trade Leopold to St. Louis for two 2013 draft picks

By John Vogl

The Sabres' stockpiling of future assets has begun as Buffalo traded defenseman Jordan Leopold to the St. Louis Blues this afternoon for a second-round pick and conditional fifth-round selection in this year's draft.

Reports indicate the fifth-round pick becomes a fourth-rounder if the Blues win a playoff series.

The 32-year-old Leopold is in the final year of a three-year, $9 million deal with the Sabres and is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Leopold gets first chance under Rolston

By Mike Harrington

PHILADELPHIA -- Jordan Leopold dropped to minus-7 in the Feb. 17 loss to Pittsburgh, the game that saw him draw Lindy Ruff's ire when he sloughed off Pascual Dupuis on the Penguins' tying goal in the third period. Two nights later against Winnipeg, Leopold was a healthy scratch for the first time in his three years as a Sabre. The next day, he was hurt in practice -- and Ruff got fired.

So Leopold has sat by for the last nine games as Ron Rolston has tried to steer the Sabres on a new course. He's finally going to get his chance here tonight.

Leopold is going back in the lineup for the game against the Philadelphia Flyers although Rolston wouldn't say for who. Leopold is on injured reserve and the Sabres have to make a roster move to make room for him. No one was missing from today's morning skate, although Adam Pardy skated extra and could be headed back to Rochester again.

(6:15 p.m. update: The Sabres announce Pardy has been loaned back to the Amerks)

"I got healthy, hurt myself the next practice and there's a new coach coming in and you want to make an impression," Leopold said. "To be out is a little deflating at the start. To get back where I need to be and get a fresh start is a good thing. I just want to keep things simple and move forward with the rest of the guys."

"He's a good puck mover and that's what we've been emphasizing a lot from our D corps," Rolston said of Leopold. "He'll be one of those guys who can get us out of the zone."

Leopold said he's looking forward to seeing how the atmosphere is on the bench under Rolston, pointing out "it's all new to me." Then he talked about what he's heard and there were clear shots at Lindy Ruff in his words.

"I get my first experience with it tonight. The biggest thing we're talking about is stay composed, stay positive," Leopold said. "This game is 90 percent mental. If you're going good, you're OK there.  If you're not, you have to find a way to get going. If we're negative all the time, really on guys, it's not going to work in our favor."

Hmmmm.

Leopold had an undisclosed upper-body injury. He said it was not related to taking a puck on the left hand during Ruff's last practice, but that it was a different injury that happened earlier in the same workout.

Rolston keeps waffling on Andrej Sekera's status the last couple days, saying it's "a possibility" Sekera plays tonight.  Rolston confirmed John Scott would play and said players missing from the optional skate (Thomas Vanek, Christian Ehrhoff, Steve Ott and Robyn Regher) would all play. Rolston said "not sure yet" when asked if he was returning Jochen Hecht to the lineup to replace Mikhail Grigorenko, who stayed for some extra work. Hecht did it, usually a sign he's playing.

The Flyers did not skate so confirmation comes later today on the Michael Leighton situation in goal.

Flynn called up from Rochester, Leopold to IR

By Mike Harrington

The Sabres called up speedy winger Brian Flynn from Rochester this evening and have confirmed they opened a roster spot by putting Jordan Leopold on injured reserve.

One issue could be whatever is ailing Thomas Vanek. He sat out today's practice for maintenance, not unusual of late, but the Sabres could be concerned he won't be ready to play.

Rolston wants Sabres to pick up the pace and stop blinking first

By John Vogl

Ron Rolston has been watching video of NHL games all season despite coaching down in Rochester, so the Sabres' interim bench boss already had a good feel for what Buffalo needs to improve.

The 3-1 loss to Toronto gave him more evidence.

In Lindy's crosshairs: Leopold to the press box, Stafford to the fourth line vs. Jets

By Mike Harrington

The criticism around the Sabres is there's too much status quo, and rightly so. That changed a little this morning for Drew Stafford and Jordan Leopold.

As John Vogl reported here while the team was on the ice this morning, Stafford will start tonight's game against Winnipeg on the fourth line with John Scott and Cody McCormick. Leopold, meanwhile, will be a healthy scratch for the first time in this three years with the Sabres.

"I just haven't got off to a good start," said Leopold, who has one goal, three assists and a minus-7 rating. "I'm trying to keep the confidence up, trying to get into plays, trying to make things. It's the little things, not big things that have been getting me a little bit. It's not the first time I've sat and watched a game. You learn from it. It creates a fire underneath you and urgency to get better."

Leopold said he was in the dumps all day Monday over Pittsburgh's tying goal Sunday, the Pascal Dupuis tally that came after a Jason Pominville turnover at the Buffalo line. Leopold dropped coverage on the cross-ice pass from Kris Letang.

Sabres mix up lines, defense pairs and power-play units at morning skate

By John Vogl

The Sabres could have a very different look on the ice tonight when they host Winnipeg.

Based on the morning skate in First Niagara Center, it appears T.J. Brennan may replace Jordan Leopold on the blue line and Drew Stafford will play on the fourth line.

The lines:

Decision on D: Who sits Saturday?

By Mike Harrington

Andrej Sekera practiced with the Sabres Friday in the Nassau Coliseum and is expected to play Saturday against the New York Islanders. Adam Pardy has been loaned back to Rochester.

So the Sabres' options could include dressing all seven defensemen (using T.J. Brennan as a power-play specialist) or scratching one. For purposes of this poll, assume Christian Ehrhoff plays and everyone else could be in peril.

Do they simply scratch Brennan? Or does Lindy Ruff make a bolder move and finally tell Jordan Leopold or Tyler Myers -- who is last in the NHL in plus-minus at -9 -- to take a seat in the press box?

Not-so-Super Sabres numbers

By Mike Harrington

We should hear an injury update from Lindy Ruff in the 1 p.m. hour as we head toward the 3 p.m. faceoff downtown between the Sabres and Florida Panthers. Can this club play any worse than it did Saturday during what John Vogl aptly called its beatdown in Montreal? Doubt it. But there's still 40 games left.

As I went through the NHL stat pack this morning, I pondered some of these numbers:

---Thomas Vanek enters today tied for the NHL scoring lead with Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos. Both have seven goals and nine assists for 16 points, although Vanek has played one less game. Frankly, Vanek needs to get on the ice more. He enters today averaging 19 minutes, 13 seconds per contest -- and that's only 58th among NHL forwards. (Stamkos is at 21:13).

Here's the leader board in that department.

Here's the second page, which pegs Vanek right between Michael Grabner of the Islanders and Joe Pavelski of San Jose.

Final thoughts and audio from a wild night in Beantown

BOSTON -- So much happened in the Sabres' 7-4 win over the Bruins that it's hard to process in the hour or two immediately after it. My sense, however, is this has the potential to be a huge turnaround game. Quick hits:

---The Sabres need to get some scoring out of more than one line but Thomas Vanek is so hot right now, it doesn't matter. He's got 15 points in just six games this season -- and 54 points (28-26) in just 46 career games against Boston. And his passing has never been better.

"He's been awesome," said coach Lindy Ruff. "That play to Tyler Ennis [to score Buffalo's third goal] was second to none. Outmuscled a guy in front of the net and really a diving type pass that helped us get back in the game."

"The puck is going in," Vanek said. "I've always been a good passer in my mind. People are focusing on it more right now because the puck is going in."

Day-after quick hits on troubling loss to Maple Leafs

GWG

The Sabres are off today, a concession to the new CBA that mandates far more time away from the ice than the old one. No way -- and I mean no way -- Lindy Ruff would have taken today off in the past. There are too many things to work on.

So the team is off to Boston later today and I'll be heading to the airport late this afternoon as well, with the next time on the ice coming at 11:30 a.m. Thursday for the morning skate in TD Garden. Still shaking my head about last night's 4-3 overtime loss to Toronto. Lots of little nuggets percolating in my mind:
