Another News staffer joining the Buffalo schools beat

It's a crazy time to be covering Buffalo City Schools. Big stories are breaking on an almost daily basis. We can barely keep up, let alone find time to do the kinds of big-picture, enterprise reporting that readers deserve.

So I'm happy to inform everyone that The Buffalo News is continuing its commitment to comprehensive education coverage by assigning a second full-time beat reporter, Deidre Williams, to the Buffalo school district. (You may have read her byline on education stories over this past week.)

Deidre's last beat included coverage of the city neighborhoods/communities and the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority. As I can personally attest, the Buffalo schools beat is challenging and the learning curve is steep, so I hope you'll offer her some encouragement and support! You'll see a great photo of her at the end of this post.

Both of us will be attending tomorrow's school board meeting, which is expected to be a long one. I asked if it would be possible for both Deidre and myself to sit together during the meeting (at my usual spot near the podium), while she gets up to speed on the beat, but so far, the answer is no. Hopefully, some folks will change their minds on that. It will be extremely difficult for The News to live blog the entire meeting without us sitting together.

Speaking of which, it is our current plan to live blog the meeting, which is expected to be quite lengthy. Check back here for the live blog and for the board agenda.
