Former student rep wants to run for Buffalo school board

It appears that former Buffalo School Board student representative Stephon Wright intends to run for one of the three at-large seats on the board up for election in May. Wright has made no broad, formal media announcement about his intention to run, but that hasn't stopped him from sending out notices about his first fund raiser in February.

Wright was an Emerson High School graduate in 2012, and the first student representative to the school board in the spring of that year. He had previously asked to be considered for an appointment to a regular, vacated at-large seat before the board agreed to appoint a non-voting student board member.

In a recent email sent out to to a variety of folks, including some school district staff and other education activists in the district, Wright asked people to join him for a happy hour fundraiser at the Oakk Room on Main Street Feb. 7 "as he launches his campaign for The At-Large Buffalo Board of Education Seat."

If Wright is, indeed, serious about a run for the at-large seat, that would make him the sixth candidate -- and likely the youngest -- to throw a hat in the ring for the three open positions. We look forward to hearing more from him.

The other candidates who have announced include: Board President Barbara Seals-Nevergold; incumbent board member John Licata; Adrian F. Harris, a teacher’s aide in the Lancaster Central School District, who ran unsuccessfully against Carl Paladino last year for the Park District seat; Wendy S. Mistretta, a member of the District Parent Coordinating Council’s Executive Committee who ran for the North District seat last year; and former mayoral candidate Sergio Rodriguez.
