This Day in Buffalo Sports History

   Nov. 1, 1996 -- The Sabres' ownership picked a winner and a loser in a front office conflict, firing team president Doug Moss and replacing him with Larry Quinn.

   Here's how The News reported on the switch as it affected the hockey team, which was in St. Louis that day:

   "The Buffalo Sabres' management, coaches, and players were caught unaware late Friday morning when news reached them that Doug Moss has been replaced by Larry Quinn as team president. "I think everybody was surprised,' said general manager John Muckler, who was told of the switch by phone. 'I think it's sad when anybody has to depart. Doug certainly worked hard. I think he accomplished a great deal. It's too bad it has to end this way.' Muckler did not receive any orders to fly back to Buffalo for meetings. When asked if the move would lead to any changes in the operation of the hockey department, he said, 'Not that I'm aware of. Nobody has said anything to me.' "
