Good early afternoon from Niagara Falls Country Club, where the second round of the Porter Cup is underway under glorious conditions.
Gone is the wind, rain and humidity from yesterday. In its place is perfect weather. Temperatures are in the low 70s with just a hint of a breeze. Most importantly, no clouds as far as the eye can see.
I'll be going it alone on the blog today, so the updates will take a break when I head out to the course to watch some players.
Our first development of the day is we now have a tie atop the leader board. Russell Henley, who shot an opening-round 65, shot 34 on his front nine to get to 6-under, tying Australian Luke Bleumink.
We'll be here all day, so settle in and get comfortable.
12:20 p.m.:Now on the first tee is Bleumink ... he's part of the final group of the day to go out, along with Dave Bunker and Yaroslav Merkulov, both of whom shot 2-over 72 in the opening round.
1:08 p.m.:Live blogging is much more difficult when there is only one person at the course, so we'll shoot as much information out as possible here before heading out once again. Just got done talking with Russell Henley, the new leader of the tournament at 8-under through 36 holes. Henley made eight birdies in his round of 67 this morning as part of the featured pairing with Jin Jeong and Peter Uihlein.
1:12 p.m.:Some of the other early finishers include the best round of the day so far by Tain Lee, who shot 66 to get to 2-under for the tournament after an opening-round 72. Of the very few who have finished their second round, Lee has the day's best score.
1:15 p.m.:Photographer Mark Mulville and I are getting set to head back out on the course. We'll be following Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont. for a few holes. Rank shot a 31 today on the front nine. We'll also chase down Harry Rudolph III, a 40-year-old mid-amateur player from La Jolla, Calif. (which might be the most beautiful place on earth). Spoiler alert: You'll be able to read much more on Rudolph in tomorrow's paper. We'll also try and get a shot of Lewiston's own Matt Petrosian, who shot a 1-under 34 on the front nine this morning.
3:03 p.m.:Back in from the course, interviews and everything else. The latest: Rudolph is tied for the lead at the Porter Cup. Wow. He completed his first round by shooting 67, then fired a 65 to tie Henley. Among the many storylines surrounding Rudolph -- he's been good buddies with Phil Mickelson since they were 6 years old. Like I said earlier, read plenty more about him tomorrow.
3:19 p.m.:Bleumink made the turn at even par, so he's still 6-under and alone in third behind Henley and Rudolph. Nate McCoy of West Des Moines, Iowa shot a second-round 66 and is 5-under for the tournament, tied for fourth with David Chung.
3:35 p.m.:Round of the day so far is shared by three golfers, including Jake Katz of Williamsville. Katz, who plays out of Westwood Country Club, shot a 64. He's tied for eighth at 3-under 137 after an opening-round 73. Also shooting 64 were Harris English of Thomasville, Ga. and Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont.
4:40 p.m.:That's it for today's live blog. First-round leader Luke Bleumink came in with a 74, which included a triple-bogey 8 on the par-5 12th hole after his drive went out of bounds. That means the final group tomorrow will be Rudolph, Henley and Nate McCoy of West Des Moines, Iowa. McCoy is at 5-under 135 after a 66 today.
The live blog will get started about 11:45 a.m. tomorrow, with the leaders expected to tee off at 12:20 p.m. See you then.
