Running notebook: At the halfway point

If our friends at buffalorunners.com are going to keep up the News' runner of the year standings, the least we can do if provide an update on the race through a link as we finish with the first half of the year.

Anyone who has seen Vasilis Kariolis run in the Corporate Challenge in the past two years knows how good he is. That's because he won twice. Kariolis is off to an eight-point lead over David Keenan, with some other runners within striking distance.

On the women's side, Aileen Hoak is in the driver's seat. She is 13 points up on Jennifer Koeppel-Acker, with Allison Carr another two points back. Hoak's second-place showing in the Buffalo Marathon showed that she's running very well.

You can check out the standings at buffalorunners.com. You might notice there are some new faces in the top 10, which is always fun to see.

Now for the list of upcoming races, also from buffalorunners.com.

* Road 2 Recovery Mental Health 5K, Delaware Park in Buffalo, 6:30 p.m. Friday, 883-3331. Sounds like it might be a little soggy, but this is a well-run race under any conditions.

* 50 Yard Finish Half-Marathon & 5K, 1 Bills Drive in Orchard Park, 7 a.m. Saturday, 830-6703. There's a lot less drama leading up to this one, which is more than welcome.

* D&F 5K Challenge 1170 Central Ave. in Dunkirk, 9:30 a.m. Saturday, 363-6383.

* Bemus Point 10K, Long Point State Park Bath House, 9 a.m. Sunday, 488-0788.
