Running notebook: Blowing up Facebook

Edna Hyer turned into a media superstar this week.

When the story on her from last Sunday's News was posted on Facebook, about 100 people shared it with others - and more than 1,800 saw the post. I saw her at a race on Wednesday night, I suggested that she start autographing the story ... for a mere $25.

She said she forgot to tell me a story about one of her first races.

Edna mentioned that people were yelling at her on the course to go back and take care of her husband and children. We've come a long way since then, thankfully.

A less happy note from Wednesday - I've heard about someone whose car suffered a break-in during a race. A credit card was taken from the vehicle, and a four-figure charge at a local department store was made on it before he even got back to the car. I think I'll be more careful with such items in the future.

Here's the race calendar for this weekend from

* West Seneca Community 5K, 1250 Union Road in West Seneca, 6:30 p.m. tonight, 863-5059.

* Road 2 Recovery Mental Health 5K, Delaware Park in Buffalo, 6:30 p.m. Friday, 883-3331. Even non-superheroes are invited to run here; race officials have done a nice job promoting this one to the public.

* 50 Yard Finish Half Marathon and 5K, Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, 7 a.m. Saturday, 830-6703. Looks like this event will turn out to be a keeper after a strange beginning. Funny that it's the only race of the day, though.

* Bemus Point 10K, Long Point State Park Bath House in Bemus Point, 9 a.m. Sunday, 488-0788.
