Fewell For The Quotebook

One thing you can say about Perry Fewell. The Bills' interim head coach is a lot more colorful in the interview room than his predecessor (Dick Jauron was as quotable as a fence post, but I digress). Here's what Fewell had to say Sunday about Ryan Fitzpatrick's decision to audible to a long pass with 2:31 left in the game and the Bills protecting a three-point lead:

"I love it," Fewell said. "I mean, I told him. 'You have some big gonads.'''

Fewell told his team during the week they were going to be more aggressive, and they backed it up by scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter of a rousing, 31-14 victory. Fewell said it was "gut instinct" to have Rian Lindell attempt a 56-yard field goal (which he made) with 3:35 to play and the score tied at 14.

Owens, the recipient of Fitzpatrick's 51-yard TD heave, said the more aggressive mindset is "two weeks late". Donte Whitner said teams would have expected the Bills to run three plays and punt in that situation in the old days. Two clear swipes at Jauron's conservative nature.

Anyway, I don't know if Fewell has a real chance to keep the head job, but he's winning over the media with enthusiasm and colorful language. It was a long, dreary three and a half years with Jauron.

Oh, and the editors at the News have given us the go-ahead on using "gonads" in print. Nice to know it's acceptable to refer to instruments that reproduce the human species in print.
