WNY Gals Go 1-2-3 in Vault

Jenn Suhr, Mary Saxer and Janice Keppler, all of whom began pole vaulting at Rick Suhr's facility in Churchville, finished 1-2-3 in the women's vault in the Boston Indoor Games this past Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Community Center.

Suhr, who won the gold medal at the London Olympics, won easily with a vault of 4.76 meters (15-7 1/2). The Fredonia native failed in an attempt to clear 4.90 meters, which would have broken her U.S. record. The 4.76 jump was the highest vault in the world this year.

"I am excited about starting out the international season with a world lead," Suhr said. "Even better was the reception from the fans here in Boston. I always enjoy being here."

Saxer, a Lancaster native who narrowly missed the Olympic team last spring in a tiebreaker, finished second in Boston with a  jump of 4.55 meters (14-11). Keppler, a Medina native, was third at 4.45 meters (14-7 1/4). She had one fewer miss at that height than the fourth-place finisher. As of last year, Keppler's career best both indoors and outdoors was 14-6.
