Ch.2 drops silly reverse countdown

By Alan Pergament

Here’s another reason to applaud Channel 2’s sharp new graphics package.

The station quietly decided to end its “10 at 10” reverse countdown of the important news on Tuesday, the same day it introduced the new graphics package. Channel 2 General Manager Jim Toellner confirmed the end of "10 at 10" this morning.

Channel 2 News has made several clever innovations in the last few years.

The reverse “10 at 10” for its 10 p.m. newscast on WNYO-TV wasn’t one of them.

How silly was the idea of running stories in reverse importance?

On days of really important news, Channel 2 routinely dropped the reverse countdown, presumably because it realized that viewers didn’t want to wait that long for a report on the big news.

In other words, Channel 2 apparently felt “10 at 10” only worked when there wasn’t any real big news and just about anything could have been No.1.
