Channel 7 morning co-anchor Patrick Taney will be leaving the station at the end of July to become a morning co-anchor at WHEC-TV in Rochester.
In a memo to the staff, News Director Polly Van Doren wrote that the move to Rochester will enable Taney to spend more time and care for his parents who live close to Rochester.
Taney's decision to leave the 52nd TV market in the United States for the 78th market also will enable Channel 7 to find a replacement that the station hopes will lead to local viewers giving the morning program a new look.
Co-anchored by Taney and Ginger Geoffery, Channel 7's "Eyewitness News This Morning" is a weak third in the time slot behind first place Channel 2 ("Daybreak") and second place Channel 4 ("Wake Up!"). Both Channel 2 and Channel 4 experienced rating gains at 6 a.m with anchor changes during the May sweeps, while Channel 7's rating in the time slot declined. Ch.2 averaged a 6.6 rating at 6 a.m. in May, Channel 4 a 5.2 and Channel 7 a 2.4.
A University at Buffalo graduate. Taney has been at Channel 7 since 2007. He started anchoring the 5:30 p.m. news before moving to mornings.
