Ch.7 adding third on-air sportscaster

By Alan Pergament

Channel 7 is moving reporter Jason Gruenauer to sports in a month to give the station three on-air sportscasters, incoming General Manager Mike Nurse said today.

A Syracuse University graduate and Lancaster native, Gruenauer has anchored sports in the past when both Sports Director Jeff Russo and weekend sports anchor Shawn Stepner were unavailable. Nurse said Russo and Stepner are expected to get extensions of deals that expire at the end of the year.

Gruenauer's move will just about coincide with the opening of the Buffalo Bills training camp. Channel 7 calls itself the Bills station. By adding a third on-air sportscaster, Channel 7 should be able to cover other sports besides the Bills and Buffalo Sabres more extensively.

Channel 2 presently has three on-air sports staffers in Sports Director Adam Benigni, weekend anchor Jonah Javad and veteran backup Stu Boyar. General Manager Jim Toellner has said in the past that he plans to add a fourth member of the sports team to replace Ed Kilgore, who recently left to work for Buffalo Sabres Owner Terry Pegula.

Channel 7's move to a three-person sports team makes Channel 4 the only station in town with only two on-air sportscasters in Sports Director Steve Vesey and weekend anchor Lauren Brill.
