Inspiration for ABC's popular "Scandal" to speak here

By Alan Pergament

The inspiration for the lead character in ABC's "Scandal" played by Emmy nominee Kerry Washington is coming to Western New York next month for a speaking engagement at Kleinhans Music Hall.

Judy Smith, who also is one of the co-executive producers of the popular series, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 as part of the Girl Scouts of Western New York's Leadership Speaker Series.

Washington plays Olivia Pope, a crisis management expert who is having an affair with the fictional president of the United States in the outlandishly entertaining series created by "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes.

Smith is a politically-connected crisis management expert whose celebrity client list has included Monica Lewinsky, actor Wesley Snipes, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and Idaho Sen. Larry Craig.

Regular tickets for the event are $75, with a package that includes a ticket, a meet and greet with Smith and a copy of her book costing $250. A portion of the cost goes to the Girl Scouts.

But some people may still consider the price scandalous.
