"American Pickers" filming here; Criqui out of CBS games

By Alan Pergament

This is what I’m thinking:

Like antique dealers looking for hidden gems, a journalist can find stories in the strangest ways.

On Tuesday night, I ran into a story.

Developer Rocco Termini stopped me as I was leaving his popular downtown restaurant Tappo and said he wanted me to meet a TV star.

Ch.2 to air historic "Meet the Press" next Wednesday

By Alan Pergament

Channel 2, the local NBC affiliate, will air an episode of "Meet the Press" at noon Aug. 28 that featured Dr. Martin Luther King and Roy Wilkins of the NAACP and aired three days before the historic March on Washington and Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech 50 years ago.

NBC is allowing all of its affiliates to carry the half-hour program in the window of Aug. 25-28.

Hall to co-host "Winging It!"; Radford ignored by Hall of Fame again

By Alan Pergament

I've always felt a little sad or embarrassed for present and former Channel 4 anchors Joe Arena, Victoria Hong, Diana Fairbanks and other anchors when they had to enthusiastically co-host the morning program "Winging It!" on WNLO-TV that includes paid segments.

Journalists don't generally want to do the news straight one minute and be part of a show that pitches products via sponsored segments the next.

I feared that Channel 4's  newest "Wake Up!" co-anchor, Teresa Weakley, would have to wing it when she makes her debut on Sept. 3.

Bills TV scare is nothing to worry about

By Alan Pergament

Some Buffalo Bills fans got a little scare Sunday morning and I'm not talking about the condition of quarterback EJ Manuel’s knee.

They were concerned that this Saturday's Bills-Washington preseason game won’t be carried by Channel 7 because of a graphic in Sunday's TV Topics that mistakenly said the channel will be off the air for the entire day.

Channel 7 General Manager Mike Nurse reported Sunday night that the station will be on the air Saturday carrying the Bills-Washington game. The game, which has a 4:30 p.m. start time,  also is being televised by The NFL Network but that channel will be blacked out here, according to Nurse and the Bills.

Nurse added the mistake in saying the ABC affiliate would be off the air Saturday appeared to have been made by the service that supplies TV Topics with program listings.

The national and local mystery of "Duck Dynasty"

By Alan Pergament

I watched the extraordinarily popular A&E series "Duck Dynasty" in April for the first time by accident.

I was at the Final Four in Atlanta watching Syracuse go down to Michigan with my older son, who had a buddy there who put us up for the weekend in his beautiful suburban home.

After Louisville won the title by beating Michigan, we returned to the home of my son’s friend fully expecting to grab a brew and watch ESPN's "SportsCenter" like any red-blooded American would after attending a national title basketball game.

Fox Sports 1 to be carried here by TWC

By Alan Pergament

Fox Sports 1, the 24-hour sports network that eventually is expected to challenge the ESPNs, will be carried locally on Time Warner Cable when it launches this Saturday, it was announced this morning.

It will replace the Speed channel and be carried on 122 in standard definition and on channel 769 in high definition. It won't be on a sports tier, which means it won't cost subscribers anything additional to get it. At least for now.

Another local weather report; "Bad" honored as great by critics

By Alan Pergament

Weather is on my mind these days.

And not just because it feels like fall.

Wednesday, I told you about Channel 7's plans to reduce meteorologist Mike Randall's presence on the noon newscasts next month.

Inquiring minds also want to know: What is going to happen to Channel 4 meteorologists Mike Cejka and Bryan Shaw once newcomer Todd Santos comes aboard on Aug. 26 to do "Wake Up!"?

Plan to cut Randall's hours at Ch. 7 takes the cake

By Alan Pergament

Happy anniversary, Mike. Now after you cut the cake, let's talk about cutting your hours.

That apparently was the message recently given to Channel 7's Mike Randall.

Some observant readers have noticed that Channel 7's Aaron Mentkowski is now being referred to as the station’s "chief meteorologist" and Randall, the former chief, is being called the station's "senior meteorologist."

What does that mean?

Fox Sports 1 status, "Bad" ratings and a happy anniversary

By Alan Pergament

 This is what I’m thinking:

Inquiring minds want to know: Is Time Warner Cable going to carry Fox Sports 1, the 24-hour sports cable channel that premieres Saturday and is thought to eventually be strong competition with all the ESPNs?

A TWC spokesperson replied to my email question Monday by writing "we’re currently in active discussions" with Fox.

Bills score big in TV ratings over PGA

By Alan Pergament

Despite being played on a perfectly beautiful Sunday afternoon, despite their playoff drought and despite competing against one of the four major golf tournaments down the Thruway, the Buffalo Bills' 44-20 preseason victory over the Indianapolis Colts had a higher rating than any of the 2012 preseason games televised live.

The Bills game featuring the debuts of new Coach Doug Marrone and rookie quarterback EJ Manuel had a 15.7 preliminary rating on Channel 7, up 10 percent from the highest-rated of the three preseason game in 2012 (14.4).
