Entercom Communications, which already programs WGR-AM as a local sports station, has given itself some sports competition.
On Thursday, it changed the format of another of its AM radio stations, the low-rated WWKB at 1520 AM, to ESPN Buffalo.
While WGR emphasizes local talk and carries Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres games, ESPN Buffalo will focus on national sports talk, as well as carrying national and local play-by-play action. Entercom adds ESPN Buffalo will include "the very best of ESPN's sports programming resources."
It becomes the third sports station in town. Cumulus Media changed a local AM station to sports talk in January and calls it 1270, The Fan. It primarily carries CBS Sports radio programs but also has one three-hour local program.
ESPN Buffalo 1520 is carrying live coverage of the 2013 NHL Prospect Tournament from Traverse City, Mich. through Monday. WGR's Paul Hamilton will do play-by-play for every Sabres game in the tournament.
The association with ESPN radio also means the return of Colin Cowherd, whose show had been airing on WGR until the station began carrying a morning show focused on the Sabres. "The Herd" with Cowherd will air from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays opposite two hours of the Sabres show and an hour of Jim Rome.
"Mike (Greenberg) and Mike (Golic)" airs from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. weekdays, with "SVP (Scott Van Pelt) and (Ryen) Russillo" having the 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. weekday shift on ESPN Buffalo 1520.
