Ch.4, Ch.7 make stunning news decisions on Sabres press conference

By Alan Pergament

Talk about stunning.

The Buffalo Sabres hiring of beloved former Sabre star Pat LaFontaine as president of hockey operations and extremely popular former Coach Ted Nolan as interim coach this morning was almost  equaled by the stunning decisions of Channel 4 and Channel 7 to stick with their regular programming rather than carry the press conference live announcing the moves.

The hiring of LaFontaine and Nolan and the firing of General Manager Darcy Regier and Coach Ron Rolston were big news stories that are larger than just sports stories in this community. The story undoubtedly will be the lead of the evening newscasts.

The press conference was carried live on television by Channel 2 and Time Warner Cable's YNN.

It also was available online, including on the Buffalo News website.
