Ch.2, Ch.4 finish tied in the morning in November sweeps

By Alan Pergament

Channel 2's "Daybreak" and Channel 4's "Wake Up" finished in a virtual tie in the mornings during the just-concluded November sweeps.

The new "Wake Up!" team of co-anchors Teresa Weakley and Jordan Williams and meteorologist Todd Santos won at 5 a.m., 3.7-3.6.

The "Daybreak" team of co-anchors John Beard and Melissa Holmes and meteorologist Andy Parker won at 6 a.m., 5.8-5.7. In other words, Channel 2 and Channel 4 each had combined ratings of 9.4 for the two hours.

Channel 7 was a weak third in both time slots with its new team of co-anchors Tiffany Lundberg and Cole Heath. It didn't average as high as a 2 rating in either time period and lost a substantial amount of its audience from a year ago.

This is a case of the tie going to the challenger.

A little math and history lesson for local JFK expert

By Alan Pergament

If you read my June story on Steve Cichon after he left his job as news director of WBEN-AM, you know I’m a big fan of the 35-year-old, bow-tied media historian.

Since he left radio, the smooth-talking old soul has been everywhere – frequently writing for a local website and on Facebook, being quoted in this newspaper and appearing on local TV as an expert.

Cichon does a terrific job, deserves all the attention and I’m happy for him. But I had to laugh Friday and Saturday when he became the historian that Channel 2 used to describe Buffalo’s devastated reaction to the Nov. 22, 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Weather coverage could decide morning race between Ch. 2, Ch. 4

By Alan Pergament

Going into the final day of the November sweeps, weather coverage could be the deciding factor in the morning competition between Channel 2's "Daybreak" and Channel 4's "Wake Up!"

As of this morning, the two stations were deadlocked at 5 a.m. with 3.6 ratings and Channel 2 held a narrow lead of one-tenth of a point at 6 a.m., 5-8-5.7.

Long Island Medium's visit to Niagara Falls on TLC Sunday

By Alan Pergament

I heard a voice tell me that this Sunday's episode of TLC's "Long Island Medium" is focusing on her summer trip to Niagara Falls.

OK, I admit I'm not really psychic.

I actually got an email from Bryan Banas, chief pilot of Rainbow Air, advising me that he took Long Island Medium Theresa Caputo and her husband Larry on an extended helicopter tour of the area this summer.

NFL scores on Bills bye week; Bon Jovi report wasn't on CBS pregame

By Alan Pergament

On a Buffalo Bills bye week, Western New Yorkers proved how much they love the National Football League.

All of the Bills' division rivals were playing on a cold Sunday afternoon and evening, when local fans had to be thankful there wasn't a game at the Ralph to brave those conditions and they could sit in the front of their TV sets.

New England's 34-31 overtime victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football was the highest-rated locally with a 17.7 rating on Channel 2. That's about half of what Bills game receive, but it more than doubled Sunday's network prime time competition, which included the American Music (7.6) Awards on Channel 7.

Couric's show bombs on Ch.7; TWC makes Discovery deal

By Alan Pergament

If Katie Couric's syndicated talk show dies after the current second season ends in May of 2014, not too many Western New Yorkers will be mourning.

If you missed it Friday, reports in the New York Times and elsewhere surfaced that Couric will be leaving her job as an ABC News correspondent to work on a new series for Yahoo.

The Times report by Bill Carter added that the Yahoo deal isn't expect to impact "Katie," her expensive talk show syndicated by a different ABC unit than news. He added a decision is expected to be made on whether it gets a third season by the end of the year.

By Alan Pergament

If you're a fan of best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell and missed his recent appearance at the University at Buffalo, you should tune in Sunday to CBS' "60 Minutes" at 7 p.m. Sunday.

And if you heard him at UB on Nov.13, you might want to tune in anyway to the profile of Gladwell by Anderson Cooper on the news magazine show.

Ch.2 reclaims morning lead, takes shot at Ch.4 "investigations"

By Alan Pergament

With one week remaining in the November sweeps, Channel 2's "Daybreak" has retaken the lead over Channel 4's "Wake Up!" by the slimmest of margins.

Channel 2 is ahead, 5.9-5.8, at 6 a.m., with the tenth of a point lead essentially a statistical tie.

Still it is good news for Channel 2, which had fallen behind Channel 4's new team of co-anchors Teresa Weakley and Jordan Williams and meteorologist Todd Santos in the first two weeks of the sweeps.
