Channel 2 General Manager Jim Toellner has been named the general manager of the year for stations in markets No.51-100 by the trade publication Broadcasting & Cable.
B&C noted that WGRZ "has moved from also-ran to market leader" under Toellner.
A Western New York native and graduate of the University at Buffalo, Toellner has been the station's general manager for more than 10 years.
The description of Channel 2 as an "also-ran" when Toellner took over is charitable, especially when it pertained to its local news viewership.
The station's news recovery has been the most impressive aspect of Toellner's years at the helm.
During the recently completed November sweeps, Channel 2 won or tied every time slot that it competed with Channel 4. Channel 4 continues to win at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Besides guiding Channel 2's success in local news, Toellner has started several local programs, including "Spiel the Wine," "The Healthy Zone," "2 Sides" and University at Buffalo sports programming.
In addition, Toellner has made better use of the station's digital channels than the station's competitors. WGRZ is expected to have one digital channel, 2.2, primarily devoted to weather, and another digital channel, 2.3, devoted to classic TV shows by next week.
